Advice on a b98 Mercury 6 hp 2 stroke

"I've got a quick question

"I've got a quick question for your Mercury Outboard guys.

Johnsons and Evinrudes I know. Volvo Penta I/O's I know. But when it comes to little Merc kickers I'm uneducated.

I'm going to look at a guy's boat, motor and trailer tomorrow. He said the kicker is a '98 Merc 6 hp 2-stroke with very low, freshwater hours.

Is this year and model a good motor?

"Dennis, that motor is (my opinion) in the model line of the best small outboards built anytime, anywhere by any mfg.

The powerhead itself and the gears are pure Yamaha. That coupled with the Merc ignition make it one of the most trouble free, durable and dependable motors ever built.

The post 1995 6 horse shares the powerhead with the 8 horse (and the 6/8 and 9.9 86-94 models). And in general, most parts on the 6/8/9.9 and 15 horse models built in 1986-on are all interchangeable (save the carb and exhaust) - so ton's of parts out there in the used market as well."

I own 3 motors from that "series" an 86 and an 87 9.9 (both with somewhere between 1000-2000 hours each) and my "new" 91 15 horse which is getting close to the 600 hour mark. Have done nothing more than clean carbs, replace plugs, impellers and gear oil - awesome little motors that require minimal care..."
