Advice on 20 hp evinrude

I have a mid 80's 20 hp evinrude that has developed a high pitch whine. Not real loud but certainly noticeable at low rpm. I was told that it could be a berring going south and I might as well sell it as a parts motor. Runs great but not sure what to think.
Any comments greatly appreciated.

Thats a tough call it could be something simple or it could puke at exactly the wrong time. Have you changed the gearoil lately? I would pull the gearbox and do a thorough diag on the engine. Lift up and down on the flywheel looking for excess end play on the crank bearings. Check for slop in the connecting rods by sticking a long screwdriver in a plug hole and put the piston half way up while touching the piston top the turn the flywheel backwards if you can turn the flywheel any without the piston moving that tells you a connecting rod bearing is bad. Then check compression three times 1-2 1-2 1-2
