Advice Needed on 1994 Evinrude 88hp

" Hello everyone. I was resea

" Hello everyone. I was researching (unsuccessfully) what I should or could do to make this motor be in the best possible condition before I take her out. I then (luckily and greatfully!) stumbled upon this site. It's excellent!

I just bought the a 1996 Aquasport 175 cc with the 88hp Evinrude outboard. The guy I bought it from did not know how many hours were on the motor (supposedly ran mostly in freshwater); compression check revealed anywhere from 120-127 psi between the four cylinders. Model number is XE88TSLEDR.

I will be changing the plugs, fuel filter, and lower unit lube. Other than this, I don't know what else I could or should do. Should I decarb the motor? (Plugs are nasty; its seems that the motor was running oil-rich). Impeller seems to be as I get good exhaust streams.

Tachometer issue. Tach works fine at higher rpms, but at idle or low rpms (under 2000), the tachometer cuts out. Any suggestions on how to fix this. Is it the rectifier? If so, how easy to fix/replace?

Kill switch issue. Near the key ignition is a picture of a lanyard and the "u" clip that clips onto the ignition. However, the boat did not come with one, and the motor starts up nonetheless. I would like this function to be operable for safety reasons as I intend to take my best buddy out with me . . . my 4-yr old son! LOL. Do I need to install a new cut-off switch? Install a new keyed-ignition with lanyard? Quite frankly, I am not even sure if the current keyed-ignition is the original. If it was, isn't the "u" clip suppose to keep the switch "out" and when the clip is pulled, the switch goes "in" and grounds the power packs, which kills the engine? The cylinder around the ignition key appears to be immobile.

Thanks in advance for your input. I greatly appreciate it. Kudos to the moderators and contributors to this site. It provides a wealth of information to the do-it-yourselfer!

Put a new water pump impeller

Put a new water pump impeller into that motor it is money well spent.Use a good oil mixed at 50:1 (don't trust the VRO )The kill switch should come on the control box and should be available at the dealer. It is possible that you have an older control box that did not have the feature.

" Thanks for your input SPARKY. How about the decarb? Any downside to runnning some SeaFoam (either mixed in the fuel or direct sprayed through carb)? Thinking about doing it, but have some reservation as the motor seems to running okay.

Any input on the tachometer issue?

I changed an impeller in a 50 envirude. Same thing for the 88hp? Four bolts around/near cavitation plate and shift rod disassembly and down comes the lower unit?

Thanks in advance. "

" Seafoam and other products a

" Seafoam and other products are on the shelf because people buy the stuff.Good oil,the correct prop is the way to go.The tach is driven by the alternator. There are four bolts on the side, one at the back and one hidden by the trim tab.The shift disconnects by removing the clip on the bellcrank and pushing in on it. "

THE PART # FOR THE STOP LANYA

THE PART # FOR THE STOP LANYARD SHOULD BE 176288 THAT LIST FOR ABOUT $8.00. THAT LANYARD ACTUALLY JUST TURNS THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE OFF POSITION.

" Thanks, Sparky.

Thanks, Marci.

About the decarb. I just bought this rig used. I totally agree with Sparky, use good oil and proper mix. However, since I am not sure what the previous owner used (or failed to use!), I was wondering of SeaFoam would be a good (or bad!) idea at this point.

Thanks again for your assistance.
