I use Mercury Perfect Seal on both sides of the gasket, very light coating is all you need. It resembles warmed caramel. It's is getting hard to find and expensive. You can use the OMC (Bombardier) version which is identical stuff at have the price.

Is permatex aviation form a gasket the same thing?

Yes Permatex avation form a gasket is very similar and will work fine.
