adding a kill switch

I am looking for help, my pops has a 2003 Merc 60hp, 4 stroke and we need to add a kill switch at the helm. the boat is a 2003 boston whaler sport 150. i’ve read the black wire with the yellow stripe is the kill/shut off wire. do i wire that to one part of the switch and the other to black/ground? or do i cut that wire and add the switch in between? or something totally different

No, The Blk/Yel is used to kill a 2 stroke motor by grounding the magneto.

You need to brake connection of the purple wire coming from the key switch. The purple wire will have 12V on it with key ON and no power when key is OFF

Place the normally closed side of the kill switch inline with the purple wire, so when lanyard is pulled it disconnects power to the motor

i don’t see wires from the controls, but do see a purple wire in one of the bundles

so i am guessing i am running 2 wires to the engine and cutting into a purple wire?

currently the wires from the controls is tightly bundled and covered, so not yet

i was expecting to see them at the key area, but couldn’t get in there. that’s why i looked to what was at the motor.

so when i take apart the controls, i’ll look for a solid purple wire, cut it and insert the wires for the kill switch

The key switch should have
1-red/purple which has 12V power full time if key is on/off/start
1-purple gets 12V power when key is turned ON
1-yell/red gets 12V only when key is turned to start

If all the above is true then yes cut that wire and install kill switch
