AD41P-A Unknown Piece in Bell Housing

When removing the bell housing we found a few odd things lying at the bottom of the housing. First, two flat "half circle" washers and a tiny spring, maybe 1/2" in length broken in half 1/8" diameter broken in half. Any idea what these might have been for or come from? I can't find the "washer" in any drawings. I was think, its a "thrust washer, but wouldn't know where it went. I mean nothing can get into that housing, so it HAD to come from the flywheel or the flexible coupling (oscillation damper).

I am hoping for a little bit more insight as I've certainly inspected the couple things that are in there and nothing is obvious. The starter obviously also goes into this space. I'm wondering if that spring I found is from that.

It could have been a leftover that was never removed...
Starter parts are possible as well...I have never had one of those starters apart so can't say on the likelihood of it being the source...

May also check over at the hull truth - boat diesel would have the suggestion back in the spring...not a lot of diesel discussions here..
