Acid washing your engine parts...

OK I have stripped the heads of my old outboard and like many, it is affected by salt and old build up along with some oil...
So my question is this..
What is a good simple home maid cleaning solution I can make, to soak my parts into and desolve the resedue off the parts (heads)?
Once clean I intend to use high preasure bicarb blaster, to give a full clean and finish..
Im am thinking a 50:1 ratio of Hyrdocloric accid and water?
Any suggestions would be appreciated..thanks

Diluted HCl will remove any limescale right enough. It also attacks aluminium so be cautious. At that dilution reactions will be fairly slow and you will also need a significant volume to dissolve all the scale. I'd use it a bit more concentrated than 50:1 but with greater care.
It wont remove oil or grease.

Alternatives might be either an organic acid or sulfamic acid based descaler (one for central heating boilers perhaps) or Rydlyme Marine descaler Any of these will be slower and may need a bit of warmth, especially an organic acid based descaler

Believe it or not there has been some success with a mixture of molasses and water, see the following and follow some of the links you see there.

Molasses bath

Might apply more to rust than the type of residue you have...
