Acceleration Issue

Took my '60 Starcraft Jupiter out with a '66 Evinrude Starflite. When I accelerate at about halfway to WOT it jumps suddenly into higher speed. Like it skips few steps in the acceleration process. Not sure what right words to use to describe. It runs fine after that up to full throttle. Appreciate any help.
