Hi All. I have been using and maintaining A 225 Honda on my Proline since 2009 with no issues other than the O2 sensors for 1700hrs. I know the motor well from the regular maintenance etc. It still runs great and is reliable . A friend with the exact same boat/motor repowered due to a bad noise and gave me his 225. I have inspected it and done the basic things filters/plugs/valve lash/compression and all looks good. So I fired it up and there is Knock, But coming from gear case. So drained it and oil looks bad with metal on the drain plug. Dropped it and ran motor with hose connection to water tube in mid section . All good.
Motor is 2005 25" so my question is what is the difference in 2006+ lower units which seem to be more available? Any recommendations ?
 
For what it’s worth . I just rebuild the complete lower on my 2002 bf225. Not that bad at all . I think I spent about $600 and I replaced absolutely everything except the gears. All bearings, races, and seals. You may want to consider rebuilding.

2006+ lower units have a different shift shaft, you could probably cut your shaft and weld the end to a 2006+ shaft
to make it work.
