Graham says your the best to help with the problemm I am having...I have an 1989 35 hp merc that the last two times I have used it pops out of forward at about 80% power and then will only stay in forward at about 30 % power anything more it pops out of drive....what is the issue...this motor is new to me this year...Bruce Curran

"2 things come to mind, the first is that the lower unit was removed and the shift shaft is 1 tooth off, allowing the lower not to fully engauge foward. The second thing is the lower unit going bad (clutch dog). Easiest thing to check would be for metal shavings in the lower unit drain plug. I do have 2 of these and have not had a lower unit failure, yet. You are sure the prop is not spun. A spun prop lets the engine rev like its in neutral when there is a load on it. The other problem with these is the crank shaft splines and lower unit splines wear out due to a bad lower crank bearing. This would let the engine rev without going any where, (water would stop pumping."

Thanks for the reply....how would i know if the prop is SPUN?.....this has only started last two times I used it....the time bofore that I did scrape some rocks with it, but it ran fine the rest of the day at all speeds....how do I fix the spun prop?"
 
"the prop has a inner hub made

"the prop has a inner hub made of rubber, designed to slip if you hit something. to see if it is slipping when it shouldn't, draw a line from 1 blade down through to the center of the prop. You should go through the rubber to the inner hub, remove nut if you have to. Once you have a line through prop run the boat till it acts up, check the prop to see if the line is still lined up. If it isn't take the prop to a shop or replace it."
