" I have a 1978 Johnson 55hp outboard which I am to rig up to my boat this weekend. Having no experience of two strokes (outboards) I was just wondering whether or not the engine recharges the battery, only needs the battery for cranking or constantly draws off the battery when in use!? Also what size battery do most people use for this size outboard motor?

" The engine has an alternator,of course it does not look like an alternator on an automobile. "

"Graham.... Any 12 volt automotive type battery will work fine. The battery will be used simply to start the engine as the engine runs on a magneto capacitance discharge ignition system.

However, keep in mind that the battery must be connected regardless. Starting the engine manually without a battery would cause problem/damage to the charging system.

The mixture is 50/1 on that engine.
