A NEW to me 86 stringer

I recently purchased a very low hour 86 400 stringer to swap into my boat I wanted to get everything ready and resealed before I make the swap. In the manual it recommends disassembling the swivel housing and resealing when changing the water pump impeller. Any thoughts? I never have in the past. Is it necessary?

Also are there any other projects that should be done prior to installation other than oils, water pump, transom boot.?

I may just be paranoid...

I swapped the outdrive into my boat over the weekend and replaced the water pump when I tested it on the muffs I noticed something odd... first is this one has an anode at the front of the lower unit and exhaust comes out around it while running my old one doesn't have the anode all the exhaust comes through the prop. Second I noticed the water leaking around the muffs it would leak then stop leak then stop almost like I didn't have enough water flow from my hose and the water pump was loosing its "prime".

Can someone clarify whats happening?
Thanks

kurt pictures be exact what your asking for each pic.

You did check the water pump ?

You run a stringer only fully down.

You grease the zerk on the front of the drive in the hole on the upper just above where the lower and upper meet. if not exhaust can get into the water pump.

Well on the water surging from the intake now I am second guessing the rotation of the impeller which direction do the vanes point if you are looking up into the pump housing?

I went back and checked my manual it said to rotate the shaft clockwise as you install the impeller into the housing. wouldn't that make the tips point to the left?

probably mean rotate the ball gear shaft clockwise (i.e. the same way the engine rotaes the upper gearcase ball gear)
That's the way I always do it - keep the ball gear turning same direction the engine will turn it

i made a diagram when i took mine out, hang a second,ok- looking up into the upper from below the impeller tips point right.

i was right this time whew, glad i was thought i was loosing it.

Ok a quick update. I have two post going so I will conclude them both here.

Turns out the impeller was in backwards but I didn't run it long enough to tear it up. I turned it over and resealed it. took it out over the holiday. It ran 175 deg all day whether I was at idle or running hard. Also on my carb issue this thing ran amazing it jumps right on top of the water with no hesitation or stumble. And its QUIET my old upper gear case had alot of bearing noise.

I can't say how happy i am for you.

In the right hands this drive is hard to beat.

I had the chance when i bought a donor boat with a merc drive and i needed the motor.

I could have changed over then but chose to stay with the stringer.

I understand the stringer and merc gen 1 and 2 very, very well.

Only thing i miss is trim and i could have that for nothing right now the whole motor tilt setup is in a boat on my friends farm.

But with a 19 ' i don't want to add anything else. I like my access and just the way it is.

I'll tell you the two biggest drawbacks that I see with the stringer is parts and that it hangs so low in the water. If its too shallow you just gotta break out the paddle! My last trip out before I changed the drive I launched at my favorite spot and it was too shallow to run and I knew I was going to change the drive so I tilted it up and Idled out of the cove and I lost about a 1/4 of the ball gears. I couldn't believe how fast it went away!

I just took my boat out to the river this weekend and ended up loosing the rest of my ball gear trying to get over a sand bar. Damn things wouldnt even engage* I hear these ball gears are some what hard to find and pretty pricy. Is there a better outdrive or something that can be swapped out to prevent this and have an easier time in shallower waters? For instance, would i be able to swap out the SternDrive for a jetdrive or something?

Thanks for the help, found a set of ball gears on ebay so guess ill be tackling them next week! Ive read over my boat manual and plenty of posts about the subject so hopefully I understand the basics of this procedure. Still a little confused about the welsh plug, do i just tap it with a screwdriver and destroy it to get it off or is there a better way?
