I've scratched a bald spot on my head trying to figure this one out. Key on warning horn all the time. Then at other times not. Just changed the oil level sensor. Before putting the tank back on and filling it with oil, I pulled the float up to see if the horn went off and it did. Put the tank back on, filled it with oil and the horn back on. I can see that the float is at the top. Horn still on. I hooked the float with a coat hanger and pulled up ever so slightly and the horn goes off. With no oil the float only has to come up 1/2 inch from bottom for the horn to go off. Has anyone ever encountered this? 1995 Merc 40 HP

The float in the oil tank is magnetic, right? If the float is the cause is there any way to fix it?

Why will it work without oil add oil the float comes to the top and the horn still goes off. Without oil the float/sensor functions as it should. I'm about to fix it with a hammer

I finally figured it out. Just unplug the sensor and forget about it!

That's what I did. Just pay attention to oil consumption...part of the get ready to go procedure.
