I am working on my Father's 1972 Mercury 110, 9.8 HP serial number 3263639. Dad past away about 4 years ago and Mom finally agreed to let me have his boat and motor. Problem is no spark. All of the parts are basically obsolete. Will the newer coil packs work with this old motor? Can newer ignition system be completely install so that I can still get parts for it?

Thanks Jeff

That's one of those infamous Phase Maker ignition motors--and they are a DOG to work one. And, no, the later ignition systems do not fit (different crank and flywheel and more). The best fix is to adapt an earlier Phelon magneto system (done several) but that requires a bunch of hard to get parts. The easiest way to get them is to buy a pre-1971 Merc 110 and transfer everything over. The Phelons are solid, reliable ignition systems that can run forever.

Unless you are really dedicated to this motor (and I can sympathize here) I would sell it or find an old Merc guy nearby to help you fix it.

Jeff (as well)

From what i remember before he passed away he said he was getting a signal from the crank but nothing from the coil packs can those be changed to newer coils?

Replacement coils of a similar color will work.

The major problem with that ignition system is the plastic points blocks. Unlike a magneto with breaker points (these are maker points) a much higher voltage is used. The plastic blocks crack or get carbon tracking that shots them out. Unfortunately, new blocks are unavailable, so you need to cobble something up.

Like I said, a pain in the *ss to work on.

Jeff
