!998 Evinrude 20 hp.

Hi guys. New to the forum and looking for some advice. I put my boat in today to do some trout fishing and the outboard was running strange from the get go. Its a 98 evinrude 20 hp that I've been running for over 20 yrs without a hickup. Seems the fuel is being restricted as at a slow troll it would run for a few minutes as long as I pumped the fuel line buld. If I tried to give it throttle it would stall right out. Heres a couple pictures of the motor and I would appreciate any advice on trouble shooting the problem as the fishing now is the best all year. Thanks. a week and a half ago it was running like a top.
Glen

Need to ask.---You have installed a new water pump impeller every 5 years or so ?-----Sounds like an issue with fuel pump , hoses or the pick up tube inside the tank.----Should be an easy fix in my opinion.

Input a new impeller last fall. I traced the the fuel line to the part on the side of the motor (Crappy picture) and Im guessing that would be the fuel pump? How should I proceed from here to trouble shoot? Thanks

Take fuel pump apart.----Check the check valves.---Check diaphragm.
What you suggest makes perfect sense, however you neglected to mention I can't find a rebuild kit for this pump so once I pull it apart I'm kinda screwed right? I have found new pumps online ranging from 20 bucks to 90 bucks for a OMC Sierra pump. What would recommend?

?????----Rebuild kit can be found on these pages ( maine engine ) all day long.-----It is a mistake to rush out and buy a new pump without taking yours apart.----Good luck with the motor.

Do not buy the $20 Amazon (Chinese), pump…the hard plastic parts ar OK, but the soft parts are garbage. Numerous experiences of them failing…literally in a few days.
These pumps (OEM), were made for decades. Search any Oitboard page here, from 6hp way up. Some will show a rebuild kit. Buy OEM, or Sierra.
It’s often only the diaphragm that needs replacement, but they are a bit finicky to rebuild. Follow the exact instructions included EXACTLY.
Look up Leroy’s Ramblings, he has a good page on this.

Okay, let's pump the brakes a little.

First off, as Racer said you can find the OEM fuel pump parts for this engine, and pretty much every other part, right here on Marineengine.com. Follow this link to see the fuel pump parts list --> 1998 Evinrude 20HP Fuel Pump Parts Diagram.

Second, I'm not sure your problem is the pump. The gray fuel line in your picture is a common problem on marine engines. There is a plastic inner liner that was known to delaminate, especially when ethanol based fuels have been used. The hose will look perfect on the outside but when drawing fuel it will suck flat internally and restrict flow. See if you can borrow a different fuel line to test this hypothesis. If you can't borrow one, you can get them at a local store for about $20. You could also go to your local auto parts store and get 5/16" ID fuel injection rated fuel hose and just reuse the fittings you have.

Finally, its possible you have a clog in your fuel tank vent. Try to run the boat with the cap on your fuel tank loose and see if the engine improves.

Thanks for the response guys. I really appreciate it. Today was the first day that I didn't have 20 deg wind chills so I pulled the boat out and did some trouble shooting on it. Hooked it up to the muffs, fired it up and let it run for about 15 minutes pumping the primer buld every minute or so. Ran like a charm. I had my wife come out and increase the rpm's with the idle arm, no load on it, while I kept pumping the primer bulb and again it kept running. As soon as I stopped pumpimg the primer bulb it dies within a half a minute. Wouldn't that indicate it's definitely the fuel pump? Thanks again for your replies I got to get this motor running because it won't be long before the ponds ice over and my trout fishing will be over.

I already bought a new 20 dollar fuel line for 50 bucks. 20 bucks my as_. LOL heres a picture of the tank. Now the site is telling me the picture is to large to load. Thanks for you help guys. I'll just go a different route now

Thank you for the advice. I only have a couple more weeks of trout fishing in my area before the ponds ice over so I elected to order the cheap Chinese pump to finish off the couple weeks of my season. i'll get a rebuild kit and rebuild the original pump over the winter, Again your advice was much appreciated.

Very solid advice and I appreciate your advice and I learned a lot from you guys here.Thanks.

Bottom line I ordered a cheap Chinese fuel pump and my old Evinrude is back in business. I'm hoping to finish the last couple weeks of my trout fishing season and I'll get a rebuild and do the original pump over the winter. Great site and thanks again for the suggestions. I just need to kill some trout before the ice covers the pond ice over.(y)
