"'77 Johnson 9.9, short shaft. Not getting water through tell-tale and also saw water coming out shifting rod hole (see picture 1 ) Replaced water pump and still no water through tell-tale. Poked wire through tell-tale hole - didn't seem to be blockage there. Garden hose hookup to copper water tube in upper housing does produce water out tell-tale (didn't use full force water through hose). Didn't remove bottom plate that imperller sits on (perhaps clogging below that ?). When taking lower unit off, metal part came out and don't know what it is or where it goes - do not see in Johnson service manual, www.wisnersinc.com documentation, or Seloc manual - picture #3. Any idea what this is and where it goes? Motor seemed to run fine in fall but water problems this spring. Any help or hints in resolving water problem or identifying part in picture #3 is appreciated. Thanks - Tom

"The plate that fell out goes

"The plate that fell out goes in the upper rear portion of the exhaust housing, not in the lower unit. Look up in the rear portion and you'll see a cou[ple slots that the plate slides in.

Those holes above the cavitation plate are the thermostat water release holes. Nothing comes out holes holes until the thermostat opens.

Water exiting out of the lower motor mount area is nothing to be concerned about, it happens. However, did you install the large "O" Ring on top of the water pump? If not, that could do it.

The water tell tale problem..... seal the water pump to avoid air entering it. Gasket sealer or Boat Armor Sealer 1000 will seal nicely. If you have a air compressor, force air into the tell tale outlet to reverse flush the passageways with air. Check the compression.... a slightly leaking head gasket would allow combustion to enter the water passage which would create a stalemate."

"Did you check the thermostat?

"Did you check the thermostat? Last one of these that I had a problem with I found that there was an obstruction in the tube from the waterpump to the powerhead. Couldn't figure out what it was, so I removed the powerhead. Turned out that the grommet on the top of the watertube was all badly distorted and pretty much blocking the passageway."

"Thank you Joe Reeves and Slee

"Thank you Joe Reeves and Sleeper !
- I see where that plate goes now and will be sure to re-install it upon assembly.
- Did install the Large "O" ring on top of pump. Won't be concerned at moment.
- Will ensure to seal water pump with Sealer 1000. I did not do that.
- Blew some compressed air into the tell tale outlet and seems like passageway is clear.

Will re-assemble tommorrow night after I get the Sealer 1000 and see how things go. I did not check the thermostat as Sleeper suggested. Hope I won't have to do that since it doesn't look that easy to get to.

When I re-assemble and run, if water comes out tell-tale ok ... should I see water immediately come out prop exhaust ?

Again, thanks to Joe and Sleeper for all the help - you guys are great. When can I get you guys a beer or beverage of choice ?"
