99 Volvo 43GL Overheating

"I have a 99 Larsen with a 4.3

"I have a 99 Larsen with a 4.3GL Volvo in it. I have had the boat for a year. I could take it out and run all day pulling skiers and tubes if I keep it under 25 MPH, I am not sure what RPM it's running as the gauge doesn't work. As soon as I would put it down and got up to 30 MPH the engine temp would climb from 175 F to 250 F so I would shut it down. I would start it back up and it would gradually come back down to 175 F. 3 weeks ago I had it out and it ran great for 3 hours then I put it down and it over heated and this time it would not cool down, I had to be towed back to the dock. I took it in and had the impeller replaced and the boat was given a clean bill of health. I then took it out and ran 1 hour at any speed at 175 F then docked for an hour then went back out and I could see that it was going to over heat again just before pulling the boat out of the water.

I was thinking the thermostat next?? Also can you tell me where it's located I am not seeing it."

"First and foremost, I think you should concentrate in having your tacho fixed, so that you know for sure you are not running the engine either outside the maximum WOT RPM or with too low RPM at WOT (i.e. overloading it).

The thermostat may be the problem, but if you are overloading the engine and you have a thermostat in good working order, the thermostat cannot assist in cooling the engine any further after it is fully opened.

"Thanks for the feedback, I will work on getting the TAC fixed. I still can't find the dang T-Stat, sorry I am pretty illiterate with this engine. While looking for it I did notice a cable disconnected that I hooked back up which I am not sure what it was for.

"In the first picture, the arrow is pointing to the thermostat housing. Remove the housing and you will find the thermostat.

Int he second picture, the wire that was disconnected goes to the automatic (electric) choke in the carb."
