99 mercury getting hot

i have an 2002 9.9 mercury whe

i have an 2002 9.9 mercury when i run it the shaft comming up from the prop gets really hot. I have very good pressure comming out the pee hole that water is also hot im running it in a barrel with ice cold water. if it was the impeller would the shaft get that hot

2 stroke or 4 stroke - just curious about that part.

How hot is hot? (since it's a relative term) - can you hold on or would it burn your fingers?

Same with the water - too hot to let it run over your hand? Any steam?

"There may be a thermostat. Merc did not install them from the factory (probably saved them 50 cents a motor), but the cover is there and it is recommended that you use one (cost about 20 bucks).

Even though she is pumping some water, if it's that hot there is a problem somewhere.

So I would definately check out the waterpump - make sure the impeller is totally intact. Check for a busted covergasket. Check the pump cover itself - it has a rubber insert on the cover that ultimately connects to the water tube - it it's split you lose pressure.

Has the motor ever been run in salt water? could be build-up in the channels....

But would start with a thorough waterpump inspection, and if it's more than 2 years since service (or you don't know when it was last done), get an entire waterpump kit from Merc."
