99 Johnson 9.9 impeller keyway

Is there a way to tell if the keyway is in correct position before connecting lower unit back up. Was wondering if it could be tested. Thanks, I know its a dumb question. I just never replaced one before

Put key in place with grease.-----Lower impeller on it.----Make sure impeller is turned by the shaft.----Lower impeller housing while turning the driveshaft.

I should have ask this question before I had it put back together. Guess I will install it and see what happens

By putting a small screw driver into the slot of the impeller key way from the top you will feel if its in if the key way is not in the screwdriver will go all the way into the slot

When I change an impeller, in order to get the impeller fins into the pump housing cup I put the housing on the top of the impeller and push down while turning the driveshaft at the same time. As the impeller turns, it ensures the fins go into the cup in the right direction and that everything else is working correctly.

Obviously this is information for the future.
