"Hello. I am thinking of purchasing a used outboard for my 9'6" inflatable and was planning on getting a Tohatsu 9.8 2cycle for around $1000 seems the gong rate. I found a 99 Johnson 8hp 2cycle for half the price with low hours. Does anyone have any feedback on the Johnson? I do my own repair work so that is a consideration. Also was this even made by Johnson or was it Yamaha,Suzuki ect.. Thanks!

"Derek, the 2 cycle Johnson's were made by OMC/BRP. The 4 cycles were Suzuki's.

The 4 cycle under 30 Merc's are Tohatsu's as are all the Nissans.

The two cycle Merc's are mostly Yamaha's (powerheads and gears).

Just about anything in the under 20 horse class, built anytime in the past 20 years is of pretty decent quality.

Pick something that you can get parts for locally - all are fairly easy to work on, however, there is considerably less to maintain on a 2 stroke as compared to a 4 - just less moving parts, so less to go wrong, but the 4's are quiet and more fuel efficient...."
