"Great Forum!!! I have a 1979

"Great Forum!!! I have a 1979 9.9 that had been sitting in the garage since spring of 2002. Replaced the fuel pickup tube in the gas tank (it had rotted off), bought the pieces and made a new fuel line, added fresh fuel (50.1) and it cranked right up. Suprised to see it ran great. Idled good and had good acceleration when the throttle was opened up using the flush muffs. Couple of weeks later cranked it back up to run it and it would run for a while then die. If I squeezed the primer bulb I could keep it running. Bought a fuel pump rebuild kit and after a couple of glitches (I installed the plate behind the fuel screen in the wrong position) it cranks up and will stay running. Let it idle for about 10 mins, went to open the throttle and it just kinda sputters and bogs down. Depending on how fast the throttle is opened the symtom may change a little. If I pull the choke out while it is wot and bogging it will accelerate although it's kinda sluggish. I did notice that while it was idling there were subtle changes in the way it idles.
So, I guess the next step would be a carb clean/rebuild? The way the instructions for the fuel pump rebuild read if you've done it right it works it you done it wrong it won't. So I think I'm ok with the fuel pump? Trying to get it to run right I removed the idle mixture knob in the front and started fool'n with the mixture screw so what would be a good staring point to set that at?
Any other suggestions would be appeciated.

Many thanks

Franklin"

You are on the right track. Re

You are on the right track. Rebuild your carb and you should be good to go. Even if you run them dry when shutting down there is still enough fuel left in there to gum up from sitting so long.

"Well I pulled the carb apart

"Well I pulled the carb apart and it looked clean. Ran a small wire through all orfices I could see and nothing was plugged. Assuming that the fuel pump was OK I figured I would start with fresh fuel and new spark plugs. It cranks up but still won't stay running without squeezing the bulb. I pulled the outlet side of the fuel pump and suprise no fuel coming out!!!! So, is there anything that would cause the fuel pump not to pump other than the pump itself? The hole where the pump mounts to on the side of the engine has pulses of pressure when I try to crank. I'm guessing that this is what the pump uses to move the diaphram back and forth. How much fuel is the pump suppose to pump while the engine is running? Because right now I'm not getting squat. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong when reassembling the fuel pump I've had that thing apart several times to recheck but it look like I have it together right."
