99 90hp stutter

"out today,motor ran good all

"out today,motor ran good all day,coming back in,got like a stutter every now and then,still able to attain max RPMs,think maybe water in separator,have been out 7 or 8 times since new separator with out draining,when I got home took separator off and drained,hopefully this is the problem,will not be able to tell until next time out,does this sound like it could have caused it?"

"Stutter, such as an ignition breakup which would come across as a sharp micro second in and out jerking sensation could relate to a failing head gasket. This would allow small amounts of water to enter a cylinder..... not enough to kill the engine but just enough to interfere with the spark plug function.

"If indeed small amounts of water were leaking into the combustion chamber causing the "stutter," would this steam generated by the burning of the fuel shine up the top of the piston as in an automotive situation??"

"Joe as per your suggestion water getting into combustion chamber,pulled plugs this morning and checked,have previous experience as what they would look like as from having head gasket problems with previous motor.checked out complete fuel delivery system and found obstruction from tank to separator,blew thru,and checked fuel flow from tank thru each section and all clear while pumping ball thru all sections,removing motor inline filter and good flow thru that also,all back together,started and all seems good,ball staying hard.seems this was it,did find some black crap in separator when I removed and drained it yesterday.will follow up after next time out.thanks all for your help. Dennis"

"still had intermmittent problem,after replacing all fuel filters,and fuel system seeming perfect,took to outboard mechanic this morning,checked ignition system and changed power pack,did a good shake down and all ok."
