"I replaced a cam shaft last fall on one of my 1984 vintage Crusader 454's and had a considerable amount of trouble getting the timing cover and gasket back on. Low and behold it leaks a little oil while running. I used the method whereby the front two bolts of the oil pan are loosened and the existing gasket is cut in the vincity of the intesection between the front of the oil pan and the timing cover. I cleaned all surfaces with alcohol, applied back RTV/Gasket maker to both surfaces and the lower corners, and put a new timing cover gasket on. I had a lot of trouble aligning the bolt holes and alignment pins on reassembly. It seemed as though the new gasket needed to be compressed a little before it would go back together. Is there any way to seal it from the outside or is this a total redo?

Suggestions appreciated.

Best regards,

Major"

"Sounds like you did everything exactly right. Think you'll have to try again, though.
