" I've a '98 Johnson Venon 225 that starts ok and runs at high revs, but when it's at low rpm's (desengaged) it fails. I've been told it needs a major repair. Can anyone help me? "

Do you know what repair you were told it needed? If it's related to poor compression, or some other engine failure, which requires a rebuild, yes it will be a major repair.
