98 VP 5.0 GI overheating issue

Ok so i took my boat out for a test drive yesterday to see if the new fuel pumps solved my loss of power problem under load. Well the problem is now when i took it out the i noticed the engine started over heating on our way back into the dock. We still had loss of power once we hit approx 12mph it drops down to 5mph. So i checked the thermostat and it was pretty rusted. So i changed this out earlier today but the problem is still happening even out of the water. Engine looses power during acceleration the one thing though is out of the water i can push the engine harder and it will move past the loss of power and keep gaining power. I have not tridd it on water yet but dont think the problem is solved either. Engine runs much nicer with everything done while idle. Can someone explain to me how to flush this out? Also after flushing do i fill with water again before e starting engine. I know dumb question but i dont know the answer to this so need to ask.

Testing a Marine engine out of the water (on the garden hose and water muffs) will show you very little.
The engine must be loaded in order to perform an accurate test!

Is this a Raw Water cooled engine?

Also after flushing do i fill with water again before e starting engine.
Assuming that it's Raw Water cooled, and assuming that you have pulled the drain plugs and have re-installed them....... you can simply restart the engine and allow the seawater pump to deliver the cooling water.
If all is working correctly, the seawater pump should fill the cylinder block and cylinder heads in short order.
As the seawater reaches the exhaust system, you will rather quickly hear a change to the sound of the exhaust.

Ok so I will put the boat on the water this weekend. I havent pulled the plugs on the cooling system yet. Yes it is a raw water cooled. I will pull the plugs to hopefully get rid of any built up debris bring to water and see if it works right.

re: "pull the plugs".... sometimes mud and debris fill the bottom of the jacket and "pulling the plugs" ( I assume you are talking about the drain plugs and not the "Freeze outs") will not result in a good drain out... sometime none at all! If this happens, unscrew the whole drain plug device and use a bent coat hanger to clean out the muck.

Also... how old is the raw water pump impeller? the "water neck" (the point at which the hose attaches to the drive itself)??? That part is prone to pin hole leaks that result in poor water flow (sucks air not water).

The 98 VP 5.0 GI drive will be an SX gimbal suspension drive.

Yes i did mean the drain plugs. Not sure how old the raw water pump impeller or neck is. I bought this mistake in february and so far changed out both fuel filters yes 2 the previous owner added a second for some reason both fuel pumps, water pump belt, spark plug wires, and thermostat. Most of the hoses look goodon the outside, the ones i have removed needed for me to use a pick to remove them bevause of corrosion.

My thing is do I keep sinking money into a 20 year old boat or call it a loss and lesson learned and go buy a new boat. Just the cost of manifold and risers and everything else that may need to be changed could be several payments towards a new boat obviously depending on which boat but i think you understand what im trying to say.

First..... understand that boats are NEVER investments..... and that they are ALWAYS expenses!
Secondly..... Boats are toys....... and should NEVER be financed!
Stick with the one you have. Save up and get it repaired..... or save up until you can fully pay for a new boat!

Sounds good but i will finance a boat and its not a horrible thing besides if i finance or not is my business. Next would you really be willing to keep fixing a boat that is now becoming to cost more then you pay for it? Because that is what will happen to me if i move forward with switching any other parts out. I dont need to save to get it repaired i have the money right now to go buy another boat but I will not be using all my cash like as that makes no sense. Saving up to pay for a boat and them diminishing your entire savings to pay for it is asking for financial trouble more so then a bad credit loan. When times are hard you need to have a reserve of cash not an empty bank account with a new boat that you cant even pay the gas for to take out. Sorry as all i was really asking is this boat worth to fix not anyones opinion on my money.
