I've got a 9.8 Mercury out

I've got a 9.8 Mercury outboard trying to determine the year. Serial number a700482 but when I reference the serial number guide it looks like an 8hp.Any ideas

Merc changed their serials from all digits to the alphanumeric in anticipation for the total new line they were launching in 1986.

So most motors produced in the latter half of 1985 had the new serials even if they were "old model" motors.

The 7.5/9.8 models were discontinued after 1985 and replaced with Merc's new 6/8/9.9 horse line, to which the 15 horse was added in 1988.

If you attempt to look up parts on-line you have two challenges with that serial - firstly it's Canadian and they are seldom listed anywhere, and secondly, it being one of the overlap serials (well you saw the result when you looked yourself).

If you are looking up parts on line you are better served using a US serial for that particular model - the serial 9445985 can be used and will be 100% applicable to your particular motor..."
