"i have a 1998 mariner 30hp with electric start that starts and runs fine but, whether i turn the key off, hit the kill switch or disconnect the battery, it won't turn off without my having to remove the cowling and pull the spark plug leads. any suggestions would really be appreciated. shrimp season is starting tomorrow."

Bad idea! You'll be buying a spark box if you keep that up.

There's a wire coming off the spark box that you ground to kill the motor. Buy a manual, find out what it is, see why it's not connected, and FIX it!

"thanks jeff, i didn't mean to sound quite so ignorant. this just happened and i was forced to pull the leads as frustration mounted. i was able to kill the engine by grounding the black/yellow wire at the engine cable plug. so not in the engine (thanks for that). i pulled the ignition switch out and plan on checking the wiring and find out hopefully if it is the ignition or broken/loose wire, that is as soon as i can get through the great glob of silicone holding it altogether. i appreciate your input and wish me luck. thanks, gary"
