"Okay. Again I have problems similar to Seth. My trim gauges don't work, the voltmeter gives inconsistent readings, and I'm not entirely convinced the RPM's are reading true. Last time out I also noticed a "touchy" ignition switch. Could this be related to the gauges not reading? It's a '98' J175FSXECS."

Start by pulling apart and re-connect all harness contacts between engine harness and extension harness to remote.
If you have no alarms but 'flickering' instruments and key switch. it is most likely a contact issue.
A thin layer of electric grease/Vaseline in the contacts may help.
Do the alrm system work as well as the 'count down' in the System Check gauge? (rev-counter lights)"

The alarm system/count down system does work.
I'll start there but bare with me I'm not real marine engine savvy yet. Where are these harnesses? More specifically the extension harness/remote.

"It is an extension cable going between engine and remote/instruments, On engine side it comes in on stb side in the lower cover. Just follow it, and it 'ends' in a lot of contacts into the engine harness itself. Pull apart all contacts, check/clean and put them together again.
Do the same on instrument/remote side of the extension cable. Even clean battery cables at both battery end and engine end, particularly ground cable."
