98 johnson fast strike problem

i have taken boat to 2 differe

i have taken boat to 2 different shops due to bad performance out of the hole and top end. i can get out in the morning motor will run fine when i run down the river. restart to take off again i lose 800 rpms off the top and boat doesn't want to get up on the pad. was fishing friday and after about 3.5 hours fishing it started running right again. does any body have a suggestion as to what might be going on

"is there a simple way for me to check the spark? i have a comp tester. i think i may have checked the fuel already. i was told to push in the key to prime when up and running when it is acting up. did that and it fell on its face. one other thing the prop is getting all carboned up,inside and out. wasn't doing that before."
