"Hi, I'm new here. I have a 98 115 SPL that the thermostats are sticking on. I had them replaced a few years ago, and it's time once again. My question is, is it possible to change the thermostats with out pulling the power head. The tech that replaced them the last time told me he had to pull the head to change them, and charged an exorbitant amount to do so. Also is there any type of lubricant or flush that can be used to try and clean them up, maybe get them working again or should i just replace them. Thanks for the help Rick"

"Should be no need to pull off

"Should be no need to pull off the power head to change them. A bit tricky to get springs etc in place, but unless You break screws and need access to drill them out it should not be needed. If running in salt water be sure to use the SST thermostats."

"Thanks for the advice Morten,

"Thanks for the advice Morten,, I got the thermostat housing off. I see what you mean about it being a bit tricky to get the unit back in place. It's a bit of a close spot to work. Do you think it may be a bit easier to replace if I remove the exhaust housing cover?
I hate to go to that trouble, but it looks like it might give me a bit more room. Thanks in advance Rick"

"Use Tie-straps or similar to

"Use Tie-straps or similar to hold all pieces together during assembly, and have the screws 'in place' before putting back. Removing exhaust cover will not help much. When ordering parts, get a couple of extra gaskets in case You mess up."

"I always used OMC's Seali

"I always used OMC's Sealing compound all over, on gaskets and screw threads. Watch out not to block bleeding holes in the spacer housing."

"Back again Morten,, I ended up pulling the exhaust manifold cover to get to the t-stats Good thing too, I had some clogged channels that needed cleaning. Those parts have the hardest gasket adhesive to remove I've ever seen. I had to result to methyl chloride to remove it and that was an extensive process. The original sealant settled in all the pores of the cast aluminum parts,, man what a struggle. I don't want to scrape it so far as to alter the machined surfaces. How much residue is acceptable to ensure a proper seal. The guy at the marine parts store suggested Loctite aviation gasket sealant to reassemble the exhaust covers with. Is that overkill?"
