"I have a 9.8 Merc. It sat for a long time. I rebuilt the carb and it wouldnt idle. Everyone keeps telling me its the carb. Well this carb is ok as I thought. The problem (I think) is with the flywheel. When I went to take the flywheel of to test the electrical parts, it wouldnt come off with a puller even if I hit it with a hammer. So I got out the tourch and heated at the coller and it popped. Unfortunately The magnet inside fell out.
There are two marks on the flywheel 180 apart so I started there and it fired up. But wouldnt idle. I just moved the magnet a little to the advanced side and it is better. This could take forever. any suggestions??

"Ya, get another flywheel. Your stator as well as the trigger uses those magnets.

The stator doesn't really care where the magnets are, but the trigger cares plenty. Without some reference it would be near impossible to guess exactly where that magnet should go. Ideally it should go exactly 180 degrees from the one that is still affixed.

However, you can probably find another flywheel on ebay for 20 or 30 bucks - might be your best option..."

"the magnet fell off when you hit it with the hammer. if the carb is not the problem then you probably have a crankshaft seal going out. If you get it running, try waving around some plumbers propane to find the leak"

"Thanks JB for letting me know why the magnet fell off. Of course it fell out NOT off when I hit it. I dont have two magnets, I have one ROUND continuos piece. I have put it togeter with the magnet in the right spot and it runs fine."
