"I believe it would with a bit of retro-fitting. You would need pull/replace essentially everything under the flywheel, including the flywheel itself.
The 73 model had the T2 ignition, so modular stator and twin points. You should be able to mount up the stator/trigger from a later model (T4) with possibly a bit of fabricating on your part.
You may also find that you have to change the carb in order to get the trigger linkage correct.
Your question deals with something I have often considered but never actually got around to trying.
If this is your "everyday" motor you may want to save the project for the off season in case you run into unanticipated issues, but I am fairly confident that it would work."
