98 57gs tapping from head pulled cover now what

"I had a problem the other day

"I had a problem the other day when I put my boat in the water. starting vibrating and noise coming from head on 1 side. Pull cover and everything moves??? whats causing this.. Did have a little water in cylinder?? Do I need to pull head and change gasket, but where is noise coming from... HELP"
 
"I would start doing a compres

"I would start doing a compression test. That will tell you is one of the valves is gone or if a lifter has collapsed. But before, I would remove the spark plugs and have someone crank the engine while you look for water coming out the heads."

"thanks for help, I did pull plugs. I can see water coming from other side on edge of oil pan, which is weird. I don't see any water coming from the head but cylinder had a little water after running for cpl mins. NOTE> did have rattling sound coming from engine, but thought it was bendex hitting flywheel so I did change starter and that part went away.. still have loud tapping and cylinder is missing as it vibrates when running.. ??"

"Uh-oh! Sounds like a blown head gasket. If so, DON'T run it long or the block will be damaged as well.

"A defective valve, a collapse

"A defective valve, a collapsed lifter, a worn rocker, a broken spring, a bent push rod, water entering the cylinder and hydrolocking, a blown gasket.....who knows? If you don't start troubleshooting (and taking a compression test would be a good start IMO), you will never find out."
