'97 40hp merc bearing carriage nut

Replaced the large O-ring on the lower unit bearing carriage of a '97 40hp 4 cylinder Merc. Don't know how tight to make the nylon retainer nut. Need help!
 
May not be helpful. My manual that covers some earlier models says 210 Ft.lbs. Good luck with that since many were metal and not nylon. I tighten mine so there is no slop.
 
I've been concerned with over tightening enough to interfering with shift mechanism. However, being nylon, can't really torc it up. Thought about shifting into gear and just taking the slop out, as you. Thanks for the reply.
 
Kind of you to thank me. I was hoping somebody with the right specs would chime in by now. I do know they are tighter than just snug but I don't tighten mine with a tool. I just use some old blacksmith tongs I modified.
 
Fuddyduddy......... I read somewhere else online about 95lb ft lb's, thought that was rather tight for a thread plastic ring but it appears, I as you mentioned, "tighter than snug". I made up a spanner wrench or a 'C' shaped wrench with a handle. I drilled in 2 bolts at the size of inside of the retainer nut and ground down the bolts to size and shape to fit. Was able to tighten rather well without breaking or chewing it up and the shifter seems to work well. Will wait a little while to see if anyone "chimes in" with spects before I bend the lock tabs and reinstall. Things have been busy this summer, but I sure would like to get the boat in the water before Labor Day... Thanks again.
