97' 115 Johnson Trim/Tilt issue

Hello Folks, brand new to forum looking for some guidance. Like i said 97' 115hp Johnson, recently inherited from my uncle. My apologies if i don't use the correct terms. Trim and tilt has worked fine forever. Last day of boating last year my uncle said the tilt would not go up, and there was no sound of motor trying to work.

then i got it last week. looking at it this year, we got the sound back (motor trying) in both directions, but it won't respond

Reading through the forum we thought we had a low fluid/Airbound issue with the trim/tilt then we notice that the tilt isn't even going up. We do hear the motor running when the switches on the drive lever or engine itself is used. Here's where we're at.

1)- Trim Pistons were slow to respond. upon filling they stated to work better, but would only work one at a time, (right side first followed by left very slowly) and would never go down when trying to use the switches, and could be pushed down by hand when fully extended without hitting the switch.

2) We can hear gurgling in the unit when we manually lower the motor all the way down and compress the pistons.

3) trim pistons will come out a little, (using up switch) but are never strong enough to lift, and tilt piston never engages.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Thanks so much

If your fluid resivoir is full have you tried tightening the manual release valve located thru the hole on the starboard transom bracket? might be loose.

Back out manual release valve two turns... two turns only. Lift engine manually and lock in tilted position.

The unit must be in the full tilted position to fill the reservoir to overflowing.

Fill reservoir to overflowing, replace fill cap screw, tighten manual release valve. Try to operate the PTT.

This procedure may require repeating a few times.

What exactly did you do when you thought you had a airbound issue?

Thanks for the help, sorry for the delayed response, My wife went into labor and we had a little girl early friday morning. Im Gonna try what you guys recommend tonight. (Joe Reeves)To answer your question, when we thought it was air bound we added fluid and attempted to get the air out by manually lifting more up and down.

Okay, if my above reply (post 3) is of no help, try this (below):

(PTT Oil Pump Air Lock)
(J. Reeves)

When the PTT unit is as it should be, the electric motor runs, the manual release valve is closed, the unit is full of lubricant, and nothing works, the usual problem is an air lock under the oil pump Proceed with the following.

Engine in full tilt position. Remove reservoir fill plug screw. Insert a air nozzle up against the reservoir fill hole with rags (or something) packed around it to obtain a tight fit. Apply just a slight amount of pressurized air (10 psi resommended) to the reservoir. This will force the oil under the oil pump to remove the air lock. DO NOT go crazy with the air pressure (15 psi tops!).

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

It works!! Thanks for your help. It was the a loose manual release screw and a loose blue wire for the "up" PTT. Boats been in a week and runs like a champ!! Thanks again!
