96 volvo 5.8L runs hot intermittently

New forum member here but can see there are very knowledgable people here and hope you can help where to go with this. When say hot i'm talking 180 to 190 degrees

Motor ran a cool 165 degrees prior to this issue. When it happens the temp gauge will creep up to 180-190 and then like enough pressure has built up and water gets passed a blockage the gauge will shoot down to 160-170 then start over again. This problem seem to developed while sitting over the Nov-May winter of 2013. During the off months I installed some new hoses, T-stat and housing, filters, belts etc. The sea water pump is 2 yrs old so I'm reasonably sure the impeller is OK and there has been a physical inspection and "looked" OK.

I have read some about flappers deteriorating and causing issues so I pulled both risers and elbows to ck them and only the starboard pin was remaining. This was the second set due to the holes for the pin was rotated about 90 degrees off from the original. I siliconed and taped them all shut and removed the remaining pin and reassembled.
I pulled the exhaust bellow and used a fiber scope to look thru the Y-pipe and found nothing.

Can a flapper that has falled off restrict the exhaust/water outlet so as to run hot.

I"m ready to install new manifolds and risers due to the boat being 18 yrs old as well, any suggestions?

I have successfully ran the motor on muffs to 165 degrees while fixing other items and will exceed that on the muffs now suggesting and circulation issue if you can't push water thru the motor, hence mannys and risers may be in order.

A bit wordy I know, I look forward to any thoughts from the forum...

Thank you in advance

Dan

Dan, remove your seawater pump impeller, and inspect it.
The vanes or blades must remain fairly resilient.

I doubt that you have risers on this engine.
Look closely at the sea water transfer ports between exhaust manifold and elbow. These must be open and nonrestrictive!

Backflow prevention flappers must be in good working order!

If your system is equipped with power assist steering, there will be an oil cooler in the incoming seawater path.
Remove the suction hose from the oil cooler, and look for any debris that may be restricting seawater flow.

I will look at those things when I get a moment Ricardo,

I may have terminology incorrect for riser however item 35 in the enclosed photo is what I was talking about. volvo motor.jpg

I read that volvo has determined that exhaust flappers that are installed can be removed w/no detriment. I attempted to include a link but when I click on it explorer cannot find it. One can google a volvo exhaust flapper and many links come back.

The 5.8 was not listed however w/a center rise manifold and an additional 3-4 inches up before turning towards the back heading for the Y pipe I cannot see how they are useful either....but I also did not design them

Thanks for your replies

I'll be in touch.....

Regards,

Dan

Dan, don't worry, I too have slipped and have called an elbow a riser before!
Risers (aka spacers) are not typically seen with the Volvo Penta packages!

Try going to Marinepartseurope.com....

http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-schematics-MarineGasolineEngines.aspx

.... and look uup your engine/drive info by model number. The site is very helpful.

Note:
The AQ Series drives were continued well into the 90's, and right along side of the VP Gimbal system drives.
An easy method to ensure that you have found the correct 5.8L model number, would be to look at "connecting components" and/or the "flywheel cover" component.

I looked up what a riser looks like and you are correct, elbow only however it does have some rise to it
5.8FSIXXXX..any diagram I have looked at for an engine w/FSI in it seems to have all the correct parts but I'm sure there a subtle differences hence the different numbers

Thx for your help, this gives me new avenues to look at.....it the event manifolds are in order, any suggestions on brand to use?

Dan

Dan, do you have an AQ series drive...... such as an SP-C or DP-C????
or do you have a gimbal system drive.... such as an SX or DP-S drive????

The AQ series is a main suspension fork and pivot tube geometry drive.
The SX style drive uses Gimbal system suspension geometry.

Dan, this is a later year model gimbal system drive. The drive itself consists of two major components.

This would be what an AQ series drive would look like.
They are calling this a 290, but it is not!
The drive itself would consist of three major components.

Rick...aka Ricardo!
I have an SX cobra, at least that is what the label on the outdrive says. Does that mean anything?. This has been a reliable vessel for 7 yrs until now....maybe go back to touring motorcycling for a default activity...they last forever:)
