Hello all,
I'm trying to purchase the proper RPM gauge suited for my outboard. The RPM gauges I'm looking at are for a 5-6 pul/rev alternator. My outboard came equipped w/ a power tilt an trim assembly, and the wiring harness has the 8 prong plug to attach to the back of the RPM gauge. Is my outboard equipped w/ this type of alternator?

Your 1996 motor is the first year for SystemCheck. Does your boat already have a small 2" SystemCheck gauge that counts down when the key is turned on? It has 4 lights for overheat, low oil, no oil, & check engine. If you have this gauge then you can just put a regular tach in your boat. The 5/6 pulse tach you ask about will work (set on 6 pulse). Your wiring harness should have the 8 pin connector you mentioned and separate wires to "hard wire" the tach to terminals on the back of a simple tach. Purple wire for ignition/power, gray wire for sender, black wire for ground. You may have a blue for the light in the tach from your boat wire harness. Hope that helps!
