96 Johnson 40 hp

Hey all, I am new to this site. Today I was pulling my boat for about 10-15 minutes and when I got out of my truck I heard the engine turning over and somehow the key came on. The gas line was unhooked so if at some point it did start I doubt it ran long. I have no idea how long it was cranking. I am hoping nothing was damaged. What do you guys think? If it matters its a 1996 Johnson 40 hp with a jet unit. Thanks

look at the wiring and paint on the head for indication of excessive heat...check compression...if it was a regular lower unit water pump impeller may be damaged but i am not familiar with jet drives...

I have no experience with jet drives either, BUT I strongly suggest you change that ignition switch.
