" 96 Evinrude Ocean Pro on salt/brackish water.
Engine started with much cranking about Dec. 23rd, in Florida central west coast(got kinda cold). When started the engine ran great. I ran the pontoon boat around for about an hour. My bro. tried to start it a few days ago
so no start for about 21 days. The starter engaged a few times and the engine fired for a few seconds with a good bit of smoke, on for about 5 to 10 seconds then killed. Afterwhile the starter would spin BUT NOT engage the flywheel.
I think the starter is engaged by centrifugal force. Is it possible that some rust/corrosion is allowing the starter to spin but not engage the flywheel or might it not be spinning fast enough? If so, what to do? I am now up North and am trying to help my bro. with this problem.
He sez the starter is hidden behind some cowling and looks like it is difficult to get at. Is changing, if need be, the starter a nasty job etc.
Any info is appreciated. Thanks for any help and ideas. Bob "

I had a similar problem with my 1996 200 HP sprayed starter drive with WD-40. Not a problem since.

" Thanks for the help. Had to replace gear package, brother did it, as the 'clutch material' holding a gear to a shaft went to hell. Starter motor spun while gear was engaged in flywheel but engaged gear would not spin. "
