96 Evinrude 25hp Problems

Ok I am very new to outboard motors and need some help. I have a 96 evinrude 25 hp and am having issues. I use it for hunting and ride it out to where I set up a blund. When I first take it off the trailer and start it up, everything runs fine. I get it out and run it about 20 min and it sits for a couple hours with no problems. On my way back it idles rough and sputters and will not go full throttle without stuttering and acting like its missing. It will barely make it back and will only go a few miles per hour. At full throttle it bogs pretty heavily.

Also, it seems to smoke a great deal. I mix 50:1 ratio but still seems to smoke much more than previous 2 strokes I have owned or seen. A couple times when i pulled the fuel line off the tank and let it run out of gas. I put it back on and reprimed it...it worked great coming back in. Today I tried that and it didn't help. Not sure if a new fuel line will fix it or what I need to do.

Thanks..any help is greatly appreciated!

2 or 3 cylinder motor ?----Perhaps test run with another tank and hose.-----You have checked for water in the fuel ?----Replaced water pump impeller ?

I assume you're using a remote fuel tank, probably a 6 gallon. Is the fuel tank cap self-venting or is there a vent screw that has to be loosened? If it has a self -venting cap, turn the cap to a loose position, re-prime the fuel line, then try to do a WOT run. If everything works like it should your problem is most likely the cap.

If it's a vent knob, make sure that's open then run WOT. If the problem is still there loosen the cap and try again. If the issue goes away with either of these the cap is your problem or you weren't opening the vent.

Check the primer bulb. Remove it from both ends of the fuel line, place your finger over the outlet end, then squeeze. If you feel a rush of air the suction part of the bulb is working. Next, put your finger over the outlet, squeeze and hold the bulb, keep your finger pressed on the end, then release the bulb portion. Is there suction against your finger and the bulb stays flat? Or, is there little or no suction and the bulb expands? If you have suction and it stays flat the bulb is good, but if suction is weak or the bulb springs back that means the check valve is bad which could explain your issues.

Try these cheap easy diagnostic steps then report back.
