I have just purchased a 96 evinrude 3cylinder 25hp outboard. Cant seem to find anyone who knows much about it. Does anyone know what the difference is between the 25 and 35 3cylinder motor. Is it possible to add a little extra power to this machine with relative ease? any info would be great!

The cyl bores are different between the 25 & 35 so they have different cu in displacements. Not much you can do except keep it tuned and well serviced. Treat it good cause that was one "sweetheart" of a mtr. If it still has the original oiling system on it I would highly recommed that you take it off and mix your fuel 50:1. That system has caused all three cyls to score at one time. Fuel was leaking back into the oil tank and leaning it out to possibably 250 to 300 : 1 and then boom!

Take the " automatic oil injection " off and throw it away as far as you can.------------The 25 HP motor has a scaled down version of a 70 HP crankshaft, same main bearings as the 70 HP so it is a solid motor.

I have the same motor but having problems with it cutting out at full throttle but always starts right up. It will troll fine and has no other issues. The place I had it looked at said it might be the powerpack but say there is no way to test the pack. Is that true?

Did you take it to a good authorized BRP dealer. The manual for this mtr has some good trouble shooting info, but you need the right equipment to do it.

Do you have the oil tank and mixer taken off of this mtr and mixing your gas 50:1? If not, you should do so. It may be part of your prob.

Good rugged motors. ----------The crankshaft is a 7/8 version of the 70 HP 3 cylinder.---------It still uses the 70 HP main bearings.--------------Not well supported by the factory anymore.-----The powerpack is very expensive and testing of the ignition components should be done.------------If the oil injection is still on it , take it off and throw it away !!-------------I rebuilt a 99 model last year , these are a good rugged motor.

The power pack on this model is a variation of the OIS system on the 60 degree engines.
Here however the optical sensor has been incorporated in the power pack which makes it a bit special.
Check the numbers on the pack with latest number from BRP!
If a dealer has taken an 'old' version power pack and used as replacement, it will fail as the old one did.
It is no instrument available to test this pack, the OIS ignition analyzer may not be used.
