96 Evinrude 15 leaking water from shift rod??

My motor appears to be leaking water from the shift shaft seal just bellow the clamp and mid section. Why? Help please! Thanks!

If the newer models are anything like the ones from the 70s that I'm familiar with, it's perfectly normal. That cavity where the water pump is at will fill up with water. You can read up on it here:

Funny thing is was running it in a tub that didn't flood the water pump housing. No water came from the weep hole. I dunno cant figure how the waters getting out the shift shaft on the lower unit. It cold water that has not gone through the motor.

You will have to post a picture on what you are seeing.----------Is water in the tub well above the joint of the lower unit and exhaust housing ?-----------Verbal descriptions can be very vague at best.----------The shift shaft goes through a seal into the oil in the lower unit.It is not connected to a supply of water anywhere.
