96, 70hp Johnson shift linkage

I just did an Impeller change on my 96, 70hp Johnson. Disconnected the linkage by pulling the r clip and pushing the pivot shaft away from me disconnecting the shifting shaft without an issue. Is there a trick to lining back up on reassembly, I cannot for the life of me get them lined up. Can't see the damn thing
Any help would be appreciated
