96' 150 evinrude stalling at idle

Hey fellas would appreciate any help with this matter. Here's the situation, engine stalls at idle but runs fine at full power. When it stalls the priming ball loses pressure and has to be re-primed to start again. Checked all the fuel lines and replaced the older ones. Thought maybe the fuel pump was going but when speaking to the Evinrude Mechanic he told me if it were than I wouldn't run at full power. So I crossed that off. He suggested it is my carbs that need to be rebuilt. The labor and parts I'm looking at $600 minus tax. So in hopes to not spend the money I was wondering if there was any suggestions on how I can fix this issue. Would decarbing the motor with Seafoam work? I looked at the rebuild kits and they are reasonable in price. Around $100 for all 6 carbs, but the work is what I'm worried about. Not sure after I rebuild what to do as far as syncing. Seems a little beyond my level. Sorry for the long winded post but really could use some experienced knowledge here. Thanks for reading. Dan

Pull the line off the pulse limiter and see if fuel comes out. If it is dry then it's time to rebuild the carbs. If fuel comes out, time for a new VRO pump.

This will cause stalling and missing at idle.

Thanks Chris for the reply I really appreciate it. When I bought the boat one of the VRO's was in-op so I asked them to disconnect them and I would just mix the fuel. (twin engine boat) I will try what you said but wondering if the way the mechanic disconnected the VRO could cause the stalling issue? You don't think Seafoam is worth a try either?

Start with the " no cost " trouble shooting !!---------------Do a compression test first and foremost -------------Then check that you have spark that will jump a gap of 7/16" on all 6 cylinders.------------It is common for outboards to run on 5 of 6 cylinders and they run quite well.--------What happens when someone operates the manual fuel pump at idle????----------The pulse limiter fitting supplies positive and negative crankcase pulses to the air motor of the VRO pump.-------------When pulled you may see a bit of misty air ( fuel / oil mix ) come out when engine is running.-----VRO pumps are actually quite easy to inspect to see if the big $$$$ pump needs to be replaced.

I've been doing a little research here and there and if I'm understanding this correctly, if your VRO is not working and you bypass to start mixing fuel, there can be ideling issues because the VRO is still pumping fuel to engine. Is this correct?

Totally wrong !!!------------The VRO can be and is used to pump mixed fuel to the carburetors , it is the oil side of the VRO pump that is blocked off.------------There are also VRO replacement fuel pumps that only pump[ fuel.--------------Without a picture I do not know what you have !!--------------------Do your trouble shooting !!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, your right I will definitely do that. Thanks for the input. I think the fuel pump on the VRO is not working and could be the culprit for the stall at idle. The oil line was plugged and wires disconnected.

Don't have a picture of my engine but the engine serial # E150NXEDB

Pull the pulse line off while the engine is off. You should not see any signs of fuel.

Okay got it. If there are signs of fuel the fuel pump chamber has a crack that is allowing fuel into the air motor chamber which would cause loss of suction. Am I close? If this is the case what can I do to fix the problem? Can I buy another pump and not an entire VRO pump considering I'm pre mixing oil and gas in my tank? Or is there replacement parts you know of that I can fix this issue with. Chris I really appreciate you taking the time. I know I'm green when it comes to this and your patience is much appreciated. Thank you

Actually it will flood the crankcase with fuel and cause a very rough idle and stalling. There may be a fuel only pump available for this engine.

Interesting information, I'll have to check mine next spring before it goes back in the water for this problem. I've got a 1991 150hp and it runs rough as all get out on idle (smokes good too). The VRO still has the oil connections intact. Runs great above idle but coughs and jumps around at idle.

Not trying to steal the thread, just wanted to say thanks for the info!
