I purchase a 9.

I purchase a 9.5 model 9822 year 1968. lady told me it was sitting 5 year now. how should I approach starting up this baby. Look at the engine setup, looks real simple. anyone have a pre-check list, or a service manual they could share. I have yamaha service manuals if interest.
Is the mixture 50:1 TCW3 or 25:1
Mid grade or 87 octane.
Should I change gear oil?

"50:1, and yes, change the gear oil with SAE 90 outboard gear oil. If it's milky, empty, etc you will need to replace the prop seal, and maybe driveshaft seal. I'd recommend cleaning the carburetor if it's sat for 5 years, but you might get lucky. Check the plugs, make sure they don't have any gunk on them that indicates internal problems, and replace them.
I'd also replace the water pump impeller after sitting for that long. It would give you a chance to replace the driveshaft seal at the same time. Whatever you do, make sure that is pumping water when it is running.
Your motor has a point/coil setup, so you should at the very least remove the flywheel and check the coils for cracks - replace if needed. Check the points for abnormal wear or pits. If they aren't too bad they can be filed (gap is .020).

Just like to add fit new washers to the gearcase drain/fill and level screws when changing the oil. (It is said that that is the commonest place for water to enter.)

Very advisable to replace the pump impeller I'd say.

Currently recommended plugs are J4C gapped at 0.030"

I was able to start the engine, however notice its not pumping water, so like you mention, water pump impeller. I shut down quickly after waiting for water to come out. Also notice oil in the water, so that tells some me thing is leakie.


So I going to get all those parts you mentioned, I need a bit of guidance where to start. So that I could get to the impeller pump etc.

By all means check out

By all means check out the impeller, but just so ya know, that motor's water flow is controled by a thermostat, the motor has to warm up before the water comes out. You should be able to hold your hand in that stream of water with no real discomfort to your skin.

The oil in the the tank water is normal, just unspent two cycle oil."

How long should I run it, before the thermostat opens-up. I started it twice about 2 mins MAX I LET IT RAN. Anyway I was touching the gear case notice it hot, so I was a bit scared. SHUT DOWN.

Spoke with the marine shop, they say I should get the water pump kit part # 382296, the prop seal and drive shaft seal it not important. But you guys are right, since I am in that area I should change it also.

"Mine takes a couple of minutes or so before it warms up.

Remove the obvious bolts on the lower end. It'll drop down an inch or so. There you will see the shift rod connector. Remove the bottom screw or either screw, for that matter, to seperate connector. The lower end will then drop away. It may take some gentle prying with a screw driver, or a tap with a wood/plastic mallot to get it loose, but it will drop away."

just watched your video that smoke looks like steam/its white and evaporates quickly in the air.

I notice there is a pin that goes through the axle. then the prop has a notch that lock into this pin. I saw it was broken. But such good thinking and design. I was just amazed.

When you mention "tuned up" can you define what are all the things needed.

"Per 1971 9.5 service manual... minor tune up

1. Remove intake manifold and cylinder head. Rotate flywheel and visually inspect pistons rings and cylinders for wear, freeness, and carbon deposits.

SPECIAL NOTE

Piston ring condition should be determined before continuing tune-up. Gum and varnish deposits on rings or pistons may be removed with an application of OMC Accessory Engine Cleaner.

If pistons, cylinders, rings are considered to be in satisfactory condition for continued service, remove carbon, surface head and covers, and reinstall covers, using new gaskets.

2. Remove and inspect spark plugs. Clean and regap or replace as necessary.

3. Surface cylinder head, and clean carbon from cylinder head and top of pistons. Do not alter piston deflector. Reinstall cylinder head, using new gasket. Tighten cylinder head screws to specified torque.(96-120 inch pounds)

4. Inspect and test points, condenser, coil, and ignition wires. Install new upper bearing oil seal.

5. Inspect carburator and choke operation.

6. Inspect fuel pump and hoses. Replace filter element and gasket.

7. Synchonize magneto and caburator linkage.

8. Check propeller for condition and correct pitch.

9. Drain and refill gearcase and thoroughly lubricate all components of the motor.

10. Tighten all screws and nuts, etc., to specified torque.

11. Tank test and adjust carurator low-speed needle; check cooling system operation. Use a tachometer for accurate rpm tests. Retighten cylinder screws to specified torque after motor has cooled off.

12. Fog motor for storage, using OMC Accessory Rust Preventative Oil.

13. Use Perfect Seal #4 on all screws, nuts, bolts, and pressed in seals in gear housing.

Thats straight out of the book. Thats what you get (or sopposed to get) when you go to a mechanic for a tune-up."

Paul, Its pumping water the way it should, based upon some of the utube links I saw. And what you said should happen.

I am going to do some of the tune-ups and take it on the water.

Much thanks for your contribution and efforts saved me money and frustration from service manager.
