"Hey all,
It's that time again...time to put the boat up for the winter. The Mercury owner's manual says to remove spark plugs and spray fogging oil (or pour oil) into spark plug holes, turn enginer over, and repeat. My question is why don't they recommend spraying fogging oil into the intakes to completely coat all internal components? All general winterization procedures I find online say to spray fogging oil into the intakes as well as spark plug holes. Will spraying fogging oil into the intakes hurt anything in the 95 XRi? All help is greatly appreciated."

"Deesel,

Since you are fuel

"Deesel,

Since you are fuel injected, it is important to stabilize the fuel system first. Manufacturers usually recommend running the engine on a fuel mixture containing fogging oil, fuel conditioner, and two stroke oil, for about ten or fifteen minutes. This is considered adequate for a period of up to three months.

I prefer draining the fuel system, and filling with Marvel Mystery oil. This requires a bit more work, especially with fuel injection, but is by far the best approach I know of. Before starting, this oil must be flushed out. Next crank the engine (ignition disabled, spark plugs removed ) while spraying fogging oil into the intake for about fifteen seconds. Spray some oil into the plug holes. Flush this oil out also before starting. This approach is good for much longer periods of time.

Of course, in addition you should stabilize any fuel in tanks, and drain, inspect, and refill the lower unit.

Tony"
