"I got a 70's model 9.5 johnson from my brother in law, his dad bought it brand new back in the day and it has ran great until it was passed down to me. It runs great in neutral and reverse but drop in forwards and it will go at a low idle until i try to get up and go?? it does try to take off but to me it acts like its missing or not getting gas or spark but idk! It does spit and sputter more in forwards than neutral or reverse and on occasion will get up to top speed once in a blue moon! I dont know much about marine motors but i replaced the coils hoping that would solve the problem but it didnt!! any suggestions on next step i would appreciate and advice! thanks Kash"

"clean/rebuild carb,ck compression, and spark, inst new points cond, and plugs,...good idea to repl plug wires too....IF compression is fairly even.ck continuity of plug wires, while rotating timer plate."

"Okay thank you very much, that definitely gives me a good start on this project! However i did forget to mention that i am not a mechanic but an industrial electrician!!! I have had this problem since last year and it seems like it fouled a plug a couple times, if that helps with any info.. I have since adjusted the fuel ratio and got it to run/idle a little better! What did you mean by "install new points <COND>?" This is a very well kept motor and always has been, I plan on keeping it for a while and replacing some of the older warn out parts!! So i am currently looking for a good repair/service manual, any advice? Or even a good web site with drawings would be much help!! I am real shy on money like most of us these days and am tryin to stay away from taking it to a mechanic!! By the way i have been looking for help for a few months now and this site is by far the best for any type of boat info! Also any idea what are the plugs suppose to be gapped at??
MODEL#- MO-14E
SERIAL#- J2850769
ANY AND ALL INFO IS MUCH APPRECIATED"

"Is it possiable the model num

"Is it possiable the model number is MQ-14, if so it is a 1968.
Plugs would be gapped at.030'
For a manual I would suggest a factory manual for your engine. You can try Ebay or google Ken Cook, he has the wrights to the factory manuals.
The points and condenser are part of the ignition system that might need to be replaced, kind of like the points and condenser in an older car. A factory manual will ansewer a lot of questions and help you trouble shoot problems."

"Need to open my eyes a little

"Need to open my eyes a little, the model number is MQ-14, now what about the "selco" manuals?? Anybody ever used one? If so which is a better repair/service manual?"

"You can buy aftermarket and o

"You can buy aftermarket and on-line cd's, but you will be better off with a factory manual. Better trouble shooting and is made for your engine only."

"Yes your right the model numb

"Yes your right the model number is MQ-14!! Thank you very much for the help, hopefully i can get this best running before duck season opens!!"

"one more thing. when i went

"one more thing. when i went to gap the points, (after replacing the coils) one side was correct at .020 but i couldn't get the other side to open up! Pressure is applied so that it is already touching, how do i get it to release or open to check it? This may be a dumb question, but I'm an industrial electrician that would rather solve my own problems instead of paying for a mechanic....... I actually did this about two weeks ago and just now figuring out the problem may not be so simple, so any advice until i can get the manual would be much appreciated!!"

"If you rotate the crankshaft

"If you rotate the crankshaft you will notice the cam that the points ride on will rotate around to a high spot, that is where you set the point gap. It is easy to rotate the crank if you remove the spark plugs and put the flywheel nut back on, you can use a wrench to rotate the crankshaft."
