when shifting into reverse I s

when shifting into reverse I started getting a grinding noise so I took off the cover and tryed to adjust the linkage now the reverse and sometimes the neutral are gone I can not get it back HELP

"Disconect the cable end at the motor...grab the shift linkage and centralise it now see if the cable end lines back up...you will have some lost motion in the cable so grab the cable end and pull, then push it...position the cable end half way and see if it lines up where it attaches if it doesnt you need to turn the outer cable trunion one way or the other to line the hole in the cable end up with the attaching lever."
