"Before I learn to break down

"Before I learn to break down the lower unit; is there a definitive method for isolating a Reverse that never locks in... Prop kind of turns... but regardless of rev... ClickityClickity. I've adjusted the Rev Cable as far she'll go. It there anything else I should twist, bend, pull? Does the connecting rod from the upper linkage to lower unit ever twist?

If I drop the lower unit is there a test I can do before cracking it open? I've looked at the gear oil and it's clean (expected those lovely little metal shavings).

thanks."

"disconnect the shift cable, and shift into reverse by hand. if it won't go in, or bounces out of gear it's time to rebuild."

"disconnect the shift cable, and shift into reverse by hand. if it won't go in, or bounces out of gear it's time to rebuild. also check shift rod just below pilot tube. yamaha built units had a problem with rod corroding through, and twisting. if this is the case, you'll have to pull powerhead to replace. and check dog anyway for wear."
