Hello,
I was having issues with my reverse not working on a boat I just got (forward worked fine). I removed lower end and rebuilt replacing seals and water pump as water was getting in as well. Gear selector cam looked a little worn so I went ahead and replaced, gears and clutch dog looked to be fine (no chipped teeth and no metal in oil/housing). I went to put back together, with lower unit still removed from motor, moving gear selector to check.
Neutral and Forward seem good. I just slid the prop on shaft not tightening down to turn by hand, neutral, it will spin both ways freely. Forward, when I rotate driveshaft, the prop will turn clockwise and lock counterclockwise by hand. I move gear selector to reverse and turn driveshaft, the prop will turn counterclockwise, but when I try to turn prop by hand it spins freely, no locking. Prop will rotate, not turning driveshaft and will not lock in the clockwise direction. Any thoughts what else it could be? Or does it need to be mounted to motor and prop tightened down for reverse to lock as expected?
